Singer-songwriter, musician and producer from the Caribbean island Old Providence. He describes his music as “Caribbean Folk”, a sound that is born from the combination of different Caribbean rhythms and styles such as mento, calypso, polka and folk. The songs he composes are influenced by the culture, lifestyle and nature of his island. His music praises the sea, fishing, human relationships and elements of nature such as the sun. The lyrics are in his native tongue English Creole, a language born from the African diaspora in the Caribbean. Robinson’s songs are characterized by their positivism and uplifting mood. After living abroad for thirteen years between Bogotá and Barcelona, In 2012 Robinson returned to the island of his birth. He assembled a local band with typical instruments of the island such as the washtub bass, the horse jaw bone, maracas and nylon string guitar. His first EP, Come Round, was released in 2014. Followed by his album Sun a Shine in 2017, both produced by Richard Blair and Diego Gómez with the independent record label Llorona Records. These albums helped to put Old Providence on the musical scene in Colombia. During the following years Elkin Robinson played in the most important venues and festivals of Colombia, such as Estereo Picnic and Rock al Parque while also participating in some of the most relevant music expos, such as the WOMEX 2017 edition. Earning recognition he soon broke through the national border to tour in over 20 countries, playing at festivals such as Lollapalooza (Chile) and Wassermusik Festival (Berlin). His musical career also includes featurings with distinguished artists and bands such as Carlos Vives, Ziggy Marley, Sidestepper and Juan Pablo Vega. In 2020, Elkin Robinson teamed up with Francisco “Kiko” Castro, one of Colombia’s leading sound engineers and producers, winner of 10 Latin Grammy’s among other multiple awards, to record his 3rd album, Milkyway, between Old Providence, Medellin, Bogotá and Mallorca. The name of the album is also the title of the 6th single that will be released at the beginning of 2021, right before the release of the whole album. Robinson states that “the Milkyway is the highway of our galaxy, a route that sailors and fishermen have used over centuries to guide them on their journeys”. Robinson affirms that this album is his exodus from Old Providence, as he transcends the borders of the island to experiment with rock, soul, funk, gospel and blues, while also maintaining traces of his characteristic Afro-Caribbean sound. The musical format of the album includes synthesizers, beats and acoustic instruments. The messages of his lyrics maintain his contemplative and critical outlook, whether praising the power of nature (“Heaven on the Mountain”), defending the preservation of the Amazons (“Amazonas”) or exalting the endurance of the descendants of Africans who were enslaved in the Americas in their fight for freedom (“Sun Outside my Window”). The first three singles of the album, “Heaven on the Mountain”, “Feelings” and “Sun Outside my Window”, were released between June and July of 2020.
